IT’S FOR YOUR SAFETY
The CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration) holder has a legal responsibility to ensure that there are working light systems on their tow trucks to help ensure the safety of the tow truck driver and the safety of other road users. This responsibility is in line with the broader regulatory framework aimed at enhancing road safety for commercial vehicles. Here’s an explanation of the legal responsibility:

The CVOR holder is legally responsible for the safety of their commercial vehicles, including tow trucks. This includes ensuring that all safety equipment, including lights and signaling devices, are in good working order.
Ontario has specific regulations that dictate the requirements for lighting systems on commercial vehicles, including tow trucks. These regulations outline the types of lights, their placement, and their functioning that are necessary to ensure safe operation on the road. CVOR holders must ensure that their tow trucks comply with these regulations.
Properly functioning lights on a tow truck are critical for the safety of the driver. Lights provide visibility, both for the tow truck driver and for other drivers on the road. This visibility is crucial, especially during adverse weather conditions, at night, or when the tow truck is engaged in activities like towing or recovering vehicles.
Failure to maintain proper lighting systems in accordance with Ontario’s regulations can lead to legal consequences, including fines and penalties. It can also result in the suspension or revocation of the CVOR certificate.
To meet this legal responsibility, CVOR holders should regularly inspect their tow trucks to ensure that all lighting systems, including headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights, and any additional lighting required for towing operations, are functional and in compliance with the law. Regular maintenance and prompt repair or replacement of faulty lights are essential to fulfill this obligation.
By maintaining proper lighting systems, CVOR holders not only adhere to legal requirements but also contribute to road safety, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring the safety of tow truck drivers and other road users.
LIGHTING SETUP
In compliance with safety regulations, every tow truck driver is mandated to equip their vehicle with a 360° flashing amber-colored warning lighting system at the rear. This amber warning lighting system serves as a critical visual signal to alert other road users to the presence of the tow truck and the potential hazards associated with roadside assistance or vehicle recovery operations. By providing a full circle of warning lights, this system enhances visibility from all angles, contributing to the safety of both the tow truck driver and fellow motorists, especially during emergency situations or when working on or near roadways.
