WHERE IS WEIGHT TRANSFER?

We get caught up on the thought that when we pick something up we’ve got the entire weight of the casualty/ vehicle that needs to be lifted. The thing that we need to understand about weight and how it transfers, and where it goes, can be tough for some of us to understand.

The chart below shows what happens to the weight.

As you lift the casualty, the degree of the angle changes. In turn, the weight will come off the lifted side and go to the low side.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The higher you lift a vehicle in tow, the heavier vehicle your tow truck can handle.

If you lift a vehicle to a 15 degree angle, the rear bumper could be sitting on the ground. It’s not a tow-able position. Tow height is about a 5 degree angle. There is not enough weight transfer to calculate at a 5 degree angle.
